R&B Singer Nivea Reveals Leukemia Diagnosis — ‘I’m So Grateful to God’

Nivea is fighting blood cancer. The R&B singer, best known for her 2003 Grammy-nominated hit “Don’t Mess with My Man,” revealed Tuesday that she was diagnosed with leukemia earlier this year. She is 44 years old.
She made the announcement during an appearance on the Cadillac Chronicles podcast. When host Mr. Brian Freeman asked what she was most grateful for right now, her answer was immediate.
“Well, first of all, I was diagnosed with leukemia earlier this year, and I’m so grateful to God,” she said. “I’ve been going through treatment, and everything is going great so far. And I expect it to continue. Amen, amen, amen.”
She did not specify which type of leukemia she has been diagnosed with.

How She’s Handling It

Nivea said the diagnosis changed how she sees everything. “It’s so cliché to say you don’t know the time nor the hour, but it’s true,” she said. “It just helped me put a lot of things in perspective. I live in gratitude religiously.”
Rather than slow down, she said the diagnosis pushed her to start doing the things she had been putting off. She is back making music and has enrolled in school to study audio engineering — something she has wanted to do for years. “I’m doing things I want to do,” she said.
She also spoke about spending more time with her four children. Three of them are from her marriage to R&B singer The-Dream. Her son with Lil Wayne, Neal, has started making music under the name Lil Novi.

Who Nivea Is

Nivea released her self-titled debut album in 2002 and followed it with Complicated in 2005, Animalistic in 2006, and Mirrors in 2019. Her song “Don’t Mess with My Man” earned a Grammy nomination for Best R&B Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocals. She was one of the more recognizable voices in early 2000s R&B and has continued releasing music independently in recent years.
She appeared at the Glitz and Girl Power Awards in Atlanta in March.
