T-Mobile Suffers Nationwide Outage, Phones Stuck in SOS Mode

What Happened

T-Mobile’s network went down across the United States on Monday afternoon, leaving hundreds of thousands of customers without service and forcing phones into SOS-only mode. Reports began spiking on Downdetector around 4 p.m. ET, eventually surpassing 140,000 submissions at peak. The outage affected both T-Mobile’s standard wireless service and its 5G Home Internet product in several regions.
When a phone displays SOS in the status bar, it means the device has lost its connection to the carrier’s network entirely. Emergency calls can still go through, but regular calls, texts and mobile data are all cut off.

Who Was Affected

The outage stretched coast to coast. Reddit users reported losing service in Utah, Missouri, Arizona, Illinois, Virginia, Georgia and California, among other states. By 6:30 p.m. ET, Downdetector’s map showed the heaviest concentration of reports in Los Angeles, Washington D.C., Chicago, New York City, Dallas, Detroit and Minneapolis. Metro by T-Mobile customers also reported elevated outage volumes, suggesting the disruption extended beyond T-Mobile’s primary network. Some Verizon and AT&T reports also appeared on Downdetector, likely from users on those networks unable to reach T-Mobile customers.

T-Mobile’s Response

In a statement to 9to5Mac, a T-Mobile spokesperson said the company’s teams were actively working on reports of technical challenges and that resolving the issue was their highest priority. The company said every available resource was focused on getting customers back online. No cause for the outage was officially disclosed.
Some customers reported their service returning within an hour of the disruption starting, while others said the outage continued into the evening with intermittent connectivity.

Social Media Reaction

Thousands of users flooded X and Reddit after losing service. A thread on the T-Mobile subreddit drew thousands of comments from subscribers comparing notes on which areas were affected and sharing tips for staying connected during the outage.
