Fever Beat Sky 90-86, but Caitlin Clark Faces Potential Suspension After Technical Foul

The Indiana Fever bounced back from a two-game losing streak Saturday afternoon, beating the Chicago Sky 90-86 at United Center in Chicago. The win moved Indiana to 20-12 on the season, but the bigger story coming out of the game had nothing to do with the final score.

Clark’s Technical and a Potential Suspension

Caitlin Clark picked up her eighth technical foul of the 2026 WNBA season during the third quarter, with Indiana holding a lead. The technical came after Clark was bumped out of bounds while passing near the baseline, ran into a referee, looked at the official, and then turned away. The referee issued the technical at that point. Head coach Stephanie White immediately argued the call and received a technical of her own. Chicago’s Rachel Banham converted both free throws.
Under WNBA rules, a player who accumulates eight technical fouls in a season is suspended for one game. Clark now faces missing Indiana’s Tuesday matchup against the New York Liberty unless the Fever successfully appeal the call. Indiana challenged two of Clark’s earlier technical calls this year, losing both times. If the suspension holds, Clark would become the first player to be suspended for reaching the technical foul threshold in league history.

How the Game Went

Despite the controversy, the Fever controlled most of the afternoon. Clark finished with solid numbers in a performance that was more composed than her previous outing, where she committed eight turnovers in an overtime loss to the Las Vegas Aces on Wednesday. In that game, her deflected pass with ten seconds left in overtime allowed Chelsea Gray to hit a buzzer-beating three-pointer that handed the Aces an 86-84 win.
Saturday’s game against a short-handed Chicago squad went more smoothly. The Sky came in at 12-19 and have been playing without several key contributors for much of the second half of the season. Star guard Rickea Jackson tore her ACL in May and has been out all year. Skylar Diggins-Smith has missed significant time with a knee injury, and Azurá Stevens has been away from the team for personal reasons.

What’s Next

The Fever’s focus now shifts to the appeal. A successful challenge would keep Clark on the floor for Tuesday’s game against New York. A failed one means Indiana goes up against one of the league’s best teams without their most important player. The Liberty are among the top seeds in the Eastern Conference and represent exactly the kind of opponent the Fever cannot afford to face shorthanded in the final stretch of the regular season.
