Lionel Richie Checks Into ICU After St. Louis Concert, Doctors Suspect Dehydration

What Happened

Lionel Richie checked himself into a St. Louis hospital Saturday night following his performance at The Muny in Forest Park, and was placed in the intensive care unit for observation. TMZ first reported the hospitalization. Richie, 77, asked his team to bring him a chair during the final song of the night so he could finish performing seated. He left the venue afterward and went directly to the hospital. Doctors are looking into possible dehydration. Sources familiar with the situation say Richie is being cautious and hopes to be discharged as early as Tuesday.

What Fans Saw

Audience members who attended the sold-out show said Richie gave a full performance and appeared to be in good spirits throughout most of the night. He joked with the crowd, told stories, and drank electrolytes multiple times during the show. At one point he held up his drink and told the audience it was nasty but that it worked. He also mentioned that a fan had suggested castor oil as a remedy and that fellow American Idol judge Luke Bryan had jokingly recommended alcohol.
Richie also addressed his June health scare during the show. He told the crowd that some things had been happening on the tour that shook him up because he could not figure out what was going on, and that when he went back to the doctor, he was told he was dealing with dehydration. The comments made clear he had been managing the issue for months.

The June Incident

In June, Richie ended a concert at the Grand Casino Arena in St. Paul, Minnesota, early after telling the audience he felt dizzy and strange. Paramedics met him backstage and transported him to a hospital by ambulance. He later postponed concerts in Chicago and Columbus, Ohio, on doctor’s orders to rest and return to full health.

His Current Tour

Richie is touring with Earth, Wind and Fire on the Sing a Song All Night Long tour. The St. Louis appearance was the finale of The Muny’s 2026 season — a historically significant outdoor amphitheater in Forest Park that has hosted some of the biggest names in American entertainment since 1919.
No formal statement has been issued by Richie’s representatives. His condition is described as stable and the hospitalization is being treated as a precautionary measure.
