“The United States and Germany played out a 2-2 draw at Soldier Field in Chicago on Saturday night — a fitting final test for both teams before the 2026 World Cup kicks off next week.”
Germany drew first blood in just the 2nd minute. Kai Havertz got on the end of a Joshua Kimmich free kick and headed it past goalkeeper Matt Freese. A nightmare start for the home side.
But the US did not panic. They kept pressing, kept creating, and it paid off in the 37th minute. Antonee Robinson picked up a clearance from a Christian Pulisic corner and absolutely rifled it into the roof of the net. No chance for Oliver Baumann. The crowd went wild.
At halftime it was 1-1, and the US had actually outshot Germany 9-4 with eight corner kicks to Germany’s one.
The second half saw both teams trade goals again. Germany went back ahead before the US pulled level again to make it 2-2.
For the US, this was a confidence builder. Playing Germany, a four-time World Cup champion, on even terms at home — this is exactly what Mauricio Pochettino needed to see before the tournament starts next week.
The defense still has questions. Giving up an early goal from a set piece is not ideal. But the character this team showed to come back twice — that matters.
Germany looked sharp going forward. Havertz, Wirtz and Musiala were a handful all night. Julian Nagelsmann’s side is in good shape heading into the World Cup.
Neither team loses anything from this result. Both go into the World Cup with momentum. But if you had to pick one side that needed this game more — it was the US. And they delivered in front of their home crowd.
The World Cup starts next week. Saturday night in Chicago was a good reminder of what’s coming.
