The Arrest
San Francisco 49ers principal owner Jed York was arrested Sunday morning at a trailer park in East Palestine, Ohio, and pleaded no contest to two misdemeanor charges on Monday. York, 46, was taken into custody at 9:35 a.m. at the Wheat Hill Mobile Home Community on the south end of town. He was booked into the Columbiana County Jail and released that afternoon after posting a $5,000 bond.
East Palestine Police were working alongside the Mahoning Valley Human Trafficking Task Force at the time of the arrest.
The Charges
York was initially charged with engaging in prostitution and possessing criminal tools. Court records obtained by ESPN show he responded to an undercover ad on a known prostitution website and arranged to pay $140 for a sexual encounter. He was arrested when he arrived at the meeting location carrying the phone used to set up the arrangement.
Before Monday’s court appearance, prosecutors amended the prostitution charge to misdemeanor disorderly conduct. York pleaded no contest to both the disorderly conduct charge and the criminal tools charge. A judge sentenced him to one day in jail per count, served concurrently, with credit given for time already served. He paid $1,150 in fines — $150 for disorderly conduct and $1,000 for the criminal tools count. An expungement request was also filed, according to the court docket. The $160 found in his possession at the time of arrest will be turned over to the Mahoning Valley Human Trafficking Task Force under the terms of the plea agreement.
49ers and NFL Respond
The 49ers released a brief statement saying that since the matter is a legal issue that has been resolved, the organization would not be providing further comment. NFL spokesman Brian McCarthy said the league is aware of the situation and will review it under the NFL’s personal conduct policy, which prohibits conduct that undermines the integrity of the game or puts the league in a negative light.
Who Is Jed York
York grew up in Youngstown, Ohio — roughly 30 miles from East Palestine — and took over as CEO of the 49ers in 2008. He became the team’s principal owner in 2024. Under his leadership, the franchise reached the Super Bowl three times, losing in the 2012, 2019, and 2023 seasons. He also oversaw the construction of Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara, which opened in 2014 at a cost of $1.3 billion. The York family, led by his mother Denise York and her husband John, controls more than 90 percent of the franchise. Forbes estimates the family’s net worth at $8.5 billion.
A Comparable Case
The situation draws comparisons to the 2019 arrest of New England Patriots owner Robert Kraft, who was charged with soliciting prostitution at a massage parlor in Jupiter, Florida. Prosecutors ultimately dropped the case after a court ruled the surveillance video used as evidence had been obtained illegally. The NFL did not discipline Kraft. Whether the league takes action against York remains to be seen.
