DeLand Walmart Cashier Accused of Hiding Elderly Customer’s $2,700 Lottery Receipt

A Walmart cashier in DeLand, Florida, is facing a felony grand theft charge after deputies say she hid a receipt tied to an elderly customer’s winning lottery ticket. The Volusia Sheriff’s Office identified the cashier as 40-year-old Tameka Hall.

What Happened at the Store

The case began Sunday morning at a Walmart convenience store on South Woodland Boulevard, where an elderly customer who plays the same lottery numbers every day came in to claim a $2,700 prize. Deputies said Hall, working as a cashier, walked him through the steps to redeem the winnings.
Hours later, the man realized he never actually received the receipt he needed to complete the claim. He went back to the store and reported the problem to management

The Surveillance Footage

Store managers pulled up security camera footage, and deputies said it told a different story than what Hall had described. The video allegedly showed her folding the receipt and slipping it into the left pocket of her uniform vest before leaving for the day instead of handing it over.

The Arrest

Deputies met with Hall on Monday morning, and she told them she had gotten distracted helping other customers and forgot to give the receipt to a manager. When deputies walked her out to her car, they recovered the receipt from her vehicle. She was arrested on the spot and booked into the Volusia County jail on the grand theft charge.
Walmart confirmed Hall is no longer employed by the company and declined to comment further on the case. As of now, no plea or court outcome has been reported, and the charge remains an allegation unless proven in court.

What Lottery Experts Say

The case is a reminder of how much paperwork matters when claiming a prize. Florida Lottery rules require winners to keep their ticket, validation receipt, and ID together until a claim is fully processed.
