Fetterman vs. Platner: The Democratic Party’s Messiest Senate Fight of 2026

The Democratic Party has a serious problem in Maine, and Senator John Fetterman is the only one saying it out loud.
Graham Platner is the party’s presumptive nominee to take on Republican Senator Susan Collins — one of the most important Senate races of 2026. But Platner has become a walking scandal, and Fetterman isn’t staying quiet about it.

What Fetterman Said

Fetterman went on Fox News and unloaded. He called Platner a “creep” and compared him to a Nazi sympathizer over a tattoo on Platner’s chest that resembles a Nazi symbol. He demanded Platner explain his decade-long activity on Kik — an anonymous messaging app that Fetterman described bluntly as a platform known for predators and underage exploitation.
“That dude was on Kik for a decade. Google what Kik is,” Fetterman said. “They go there because it can be anonymous and they can do all kinds of depraved things.”
Fetterman even made a wager: he’d wear a suit every day — something he famously refuses to do — if Platner could prove none of the people he messaged on Kik were minors.

Platner Hit Back

Platner didn’t take it quietly. At a Sunday town hall in Portland, Maine, he called Fetterman “an ahole” — directly, in front of supporters. “You can’t just go down there and be John Fetterman and just sort of be an ahole,” Platner said.
He later added that Fetterman “said mean things” about him, so he’s “allowed to say that.”

The Scandals Piling Up

The list against Platner keeps growing. Beyond the Nazi tattoo and Kik controversy, old Reddit posts have surfaced where he blamed sexual assault victims and questioned why Black people don’t tip. Two women have come forward saying his behavior left them afraid. His campaign has been described as chaotic internally.
Most Democratic senators are still standing by him. Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer met with Platner and called the meeting productive. Senator Ruben Gallego of Arizona said voters won’t care about old text messages when gas and rent are still high. Fetterman is the lone Democrat publicly refusing to back him.

What This Means

Maine is one of the seats Democrats need to flip to take back the Senate. Platner was supposed to be the guy to beat Susan Collins. Now the party is debating whether he’s become too much of a liability to carry to November.
Fetterman’s argument is simple. You don’t prop up a candidate with a Nazi tattoo and a Kik account just because you need the seat. Some things matter more than winning.
The Maine primary is Tuesday. Voters get the final say.
