Senator Lindsey Graham Dead at 71 — Cardiac Arrest at Washington Home

Lindsey Graham is dead. The South Carolina Republican senator died Saturday night at his Washington home. He was 71 years old — two days past his birthday.
His office released a brief statement saying Graham died from “a brief and sudden illness” and asked for privacy. Audio reviewed by NPR shows emergency personnel responded to a call of cardiac arrest at Graham’s home Saturday night. He had been scheduled to appear on NBC’s Meet the Press Sunday morning. He never made it.
A top staffer told NBC News there was no indication Graham was feeling unwell before his death. On Friday, he was in Kyiv meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy — his tenth visit to Ukraine since Russia invaded in 2022. He flew home to Washington and died that night.

Who Graham Was

Graham spent nearly 25 years in the Senate after first serving in the House starting in 1995. He was born in Central, South Carolina, where his family ran a restaurant and pool hall. His parents died while he was still in school. He legally adopted his younger sister Darline and raised her himself.
He was a military veteran, a lawyer, and one of the most recognizable faces in the Senate — appearing on Meet the Press 63 times over the years. He was a defense hawk who pushed for strong U.S. military engagement abroad, a fierce supporter of Israel, and one of the most vocal advocates for Ukraine in Congress.
His relationship with Donald Trump was complicated. In 2016, Graham called Trump “unfit for office” and used a profanity to describe him publicly. After Trump won, Graham became one of his closest allies in the Senate. Trump posted on Truth Social Sunday: “Senator Lindsey Graham, one of the greatest people and Senators I have ever known, is dead. He was a true American Patriot.”
Trump said he spoke with Graham on Saturday evening. “That could have been his last call,” Trump said.

Senate Majority Leader John Thune called Graham “a strong advocate for the United States and a strong ally to freedom-loving countries across the globe.”
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said: “America has lost a great patriot. Israel has lost one of the great champions of the American-Israeli alliance. I’ve lost a beloved friend.”
Zelenskyy said Graham “was a true defender of freedom and the values that make our world safer.”
South Carolina Governor Henry McMaster called him “irreplaceable.”
Iran’s state media celebrated his death, calling him “warmongering” and “anti-Iranian.”

What Happens Next

Graham was running for his fifth Senate term in 2026. Under South Carolina law, Governor McMaster will appoint a temporary replacement. Graham had raised $15.6 million for his reelection campaign and had Trump’s endorsement.
His death comes as Senator Mitch McConnell of Kentucky remains hospitalized for undisclosed health reasons, further narrowing the Republican Senate majority.
Graham was 71. He died two days after his birthday.
