Sinner Defends Wimbledon Title, Beats Zverev in Four Sets

Jannik Sinner is a two-time Wimbledon champion. The world number one beat Alexander Zverev 6-7(7), 7-6(2), 6-3, 6-4 on Sunday to successfully defend his title at the All England Club. It is his fifth Grand Slam trophy overall and his first major of 2026.
Sinner becomes just the tenth man in the Open Era to defend the Wimbledon men’s singles title.

How It Went

Zverev won the first set in a tiebreak. He was aggressive from the start, taking full cuts off both wings, and his serve was sharp — hitting speeds up to 139 miles per hour. He saved a set point at 6/7 in the tiebreak and sealed the opener with a crushing forehand.
The second set went to another tiebreak. This time Sinner dominated it 7-2. From that point, the match turned. Zverev slipped in the third set and appeared to hyperextend his right knee. He called for medical attention. After treatment, he returned but was visibly uncomfortable. His movement was limited for the rest of the match.
Sinner read the situation and adjusted. He started hitting more to Zverev’s legs, making him move. The unforced errors piled up for the German — 45 in total compared to 25 for Sinner. Sinner closed out the third and fourth sets without dropping his focus.

The Numbers

Sinner hit 58 winners to Zverev’s 49. Zverev had more aces — 17 to 15. But the error count told the real story. Before the knee issue, this was a close match. After it, Sinner was in control.
This was Sinner’s tenth consecutive win over Zverev.

What Zverev Said

“Congratulations to Jannik. He showed once again why he is the best player in the world,” Zverev said at the trophy presentation. “We came into Wimbledon having never reached a quarter-final and we played a first Wimbledon final. That’s a pretty good two months.”
Zverev had won the French Open just weeks ago. He was trying to become the first man since 1968 to follow a maiden major title with another at the very next Grand Slam. Sinner stopped that.

Where Sinner Stands

Sinner was knocked out in the second round at Roland Garros in May, struggling in heavy heat conditions. He came to Wimbledon without a Grand Slam title this year. He leaves with one.
He now leads the tour with six titles in 2026. Carlos Alcaraz has seven Grand Slam trophies overall to Sinner’s five, but on grass in 2026, there was only one man.
